Getting here is part of the adventure! Look at it this way, if it were really easy to get here in just a few hours, every Tom and Jerry and Dick and Harry would be here spoiling our peace and natural beauty. So, there is a little travel time involved-remember you wanted an off- the- beaten- tourist- path experience-right?
There are several ways to get here from San Jose- by small plane, rental car, bus, taxi, or van shuttle. There are 2 roads to the Pacific Coast from San Jose. One is the road to San Isidro del General over the mountains, on your way to Dominical, and then there is the coastal route passing through Jaco and Quepos. Both take about the same amount of driving time to Dominical.
The drive from SJO to Dominical takes about 4 hours. We do NOT recommend that you take this drive at night, because of the curvy and narrow mountainous roads. We suggest that you take your time and make this road trip part of your adventure. Plus, by day, you will see some spectacular scenery along the way.
Plan at least 1, or maybe 1 and a half travel days, to get here, and the same for your return to San Jose. Your drive also depends on your arrival and departure times of your flights to/from SJO-San Jose. If your flight arrives in SJO before noon, you may be able to make the trip to Dominical in one day, arriving just before sunset. Or, you could also stay the night in San Jose, relax, then make a leisurely trip to the Pacific Coast.
NOTE: When you arrive in Costa Rica please call us at 889-6432 and let us know when you are leaving San Jose and are on your way to Dominical. There are numerous pay phones around and you can purchase a phone card at the SJO airport and many other shops to make a local Costa Rica phone call. That way we can assist you with directions in getting to Tree Top Cottages once you have arrived in Dominical. All calls in Costa Rica are local- just follow the instructions on your phone card and dial the 7 numbers from any phone.
